The Indianapolis Downtown Canal was originally build about 20 years ago. In
November of 2007, the city contracted with
Merrell Brothers of
Kokomo to clean the canal for a cost of $423,000. The work
was completed by Mid March of 2008. Since that time, the city has contracted
with Aquatic Control out of Seymour, IN to keep the vegetation to a minimum. The
chemicals used to control the algae are safe to humans.
There are no swimming restrictions on
any of the products used to treat the canal. All
products are tested by EPA. The products used at the proper rates are likely
less problematic to swimmers than chlorine in a swimming pool. The rate of
copper which are used is
below limits allowed in drinking water.
Water tests are conducted every few weeks to determine the bacteria levels. To this date, all tests have shown the bacteria level very low.
The canal water should make an enjoyable swimming experience!
