PRE-RACE MEETING
There is NO pre-race meeting for this event! Please read all these materials and
view the maps to understand how the event will flow on race day. Be sure to give
yourself enough time to park, walk/ride to the transition area, set up your
'stuff' and get to the start line.
THE DUATHLON START
see first
run course
All duathletes will begin together on the walkway directly in front of the NCAA
building. Start time will be 7:45AM.
THE SWIM START
see canal swim course
see detail of Olympic distance
start area
Due to the unique canal swim venue, we will conduct waves of 30 people at a
time. Each wave will be appoximately 2-3 minutes apart.
The OLYMPIC DISTANCE will go first at 7:30AM
The SPRINT DISTANCE will go at approximately 8:15AM
We are starting people based on their swimming abilities - thus the fast
swimmers (fish) will go first then the 'average' then the ' swim like a rock'
will go last. This will help alleviate a lot of passing in the canal.
We will post approximate starting times on our website at www.tuxbro.com a few
days before the event so you will have a better idea when exactly you will
start.
NOTE: You will need to walk/jog/run to the start line
of each swim start - please arrive early enough to make it to the start line! We
will have a gear-check table for your shoes and other belongings at each swim
start. This gear will be brought back to the start/finish areas - look for
signs. We will have portable toilets at the Olympic Distance start only (not the
sprint).
SWIM RULES
1. Each swimmer must wear a swim cap provided by the race organizers.
2. USAT Rules state that if the water temperature is between 79-84o you may wear
a wet suit, however you will not be eligible for awards or be ranked (you will
not be listed in the results). If the water temperature is 78o or below,
wetsuits are allowed. If the water temperature is 84o or above, no wet suits are
allowed. see top of this page for updates on water
temperature.
3. No fins, paddles, floatation devices or buoyancy suits of any kind allowed.
4. Swim goggles or face masks may be worn.
5. No individual paddlers or escorts allowed. Course is adequately patrolled by
certified life guards stationed along the canal surface.
6. The swim is a swim... meaning you cannot walk along the canal bottom. If you
need to stop for a few seconds to adjust goggles or 'catch your breath' you may
do so, but you cannot advance your position in the water. If official assistance
is rendered during the swim, the swimmer shall be disqualified. Water safety
personnel have the authority to disqualify individuals if they are walking.
CAUTION - the surface of the canal is very slippery - be sure to only enter the canal using the steps!
BIKE AND RUN
view bike course
The bike course is 12.5 miles and the run course is 3.1 miles.
If you are doing Olympic Distance you MUST do 2 loops each! Sprint Distance -
just do ONE loop for bike and run course.
BIKE AND RUN RULES
Remember - If you are warming up before the event, you must have your helmet on
and buckled at all times! If not, you will be DQ'd.
1. The end of your handle bars must have plugs in them.
2. Absolutely no drafting of another bike or vehicle is allowed. This is an
individual endurance event. Enforcement of the drafting rules will be monitored
by marshals on motorcycles and additional cyclists. The draft zone is 2 meters
wide by 7 meters long. Once you enter this zone you have 15 seconds to pass
through or back out.
3. CPSC, ANSI or Snell approved helmets are required at all times while on the
bike. Chin strap must be buckled at all times.
4. No outside help is allowed.
5. Each participant will be individually responsible for repair and maintenance
of own bike. T-3 MultiSport is the official bike maintenance store.
6. All participants must follow directions of course officials and public
authorities. Do not cross the double center line of the road or you will be DQ'd.
7. Each participant must affix a bike number (provided to you at packet pick-up)
to the bike frame. Each participant must wear their race number, with tear-off
tags affixed to the front of his/her clothes during the run.
8. Bikes must be positioned in the correct bike racks before and after the bike
section. No glass containers are allowed in the transition area.
9. You must stay to the right side of the road at all time unless to pass. If
you do not stay right you may be called for BLOCKING which will result in a time
penalty.
Safety Tip: There are railroad tracks that cross 2
sections of the bike course - although we have confirmed that no trains will be
in the area that morning - you will need to use caution going over them - we
will have plastic mats covering any rough spots and will need you to stay to the
right side of the road in both cases - we will have a volunteer and some extra
cones on hand to give you warning - just be aware!

A note from the race
director...
It was spring time of this year when I received official permission from the
City of Indianapolis to utilize the downtown canal for a triathlon - how cool!
Since that time I've been trying to figure out how this event will work . All
the logistics that go along with a triathlon are doubled when you start a NEW
event at a NEW venue! I'm sure I've forgotten something here and there...but
overall, I think you'll have a great experience at TRI INDY! I will be sending
out a survey shortly after the
event to get your feedback so that this event can be better in future years!
Please have a FUN and SAFE event !
